“But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:43-45)
The disciples often argued about who was the greatest, but Jesus turned their definition of greatness upside down. In His kingdom, true greatness is found in serving others, not in being served or seeking status. Jesus Himself—the King of kings—came not to be honored by others, but to lay down His life for them. His entire mission was one of sacrificial love, poured out for the sake of others. When we serve, we are joining in His mission and displaying His character to the world.
Serving like Jesus means putting others’ needs ahead of our own and being willing to lose ourselves for the sake of God’s glory. It’s not about recognition or reward, but about reflecting the heart of Christ. In a world that chases self-promotion and comfort, serving stands out as a radical act of love. Each day we have opportunities to put others first—at home, at school, at work, or in our community. When we serve, we share in the joy of Jesus and point others to Him.
- Where are you tempted to seek recognition or status instead of serving quietly?
- Who in your life might need you to “go last” so that they can be lifted up?
- Ask God to free you from the need for recognition and to give you joy in serving for His sake. Pray for specific people you can serve today, and ask for the heart of a true servant.
