“Explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, ‘This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.'” (Acts 17:3)
Paul had access to many great Old Testament stories. He could have entertained them with David and Goliath or inspired them with the Exodus. But he zeroed in on the story under all stories: Jesus died, Jesus rose, Jesus reigns. For three weeks in that Thessalonian synagogue, Paul hammered home this central truth. Jesus had to die because we needed forgiveness. Jesus rose because death couldn’t hold Him. And Jesus now reigns as the promised King. This wasn’t just good theology. It was the message that changes everything.
We live in a time when some want to water down the gospel to make it more palatable, to remove the offense of substitutionary atonement or soften the exclusivity of Christ. But the gospel is all we have. You never graduate from it. Young people don’t need dumbed down teaching or watered down theology. They need serious discipleship anchored in the truth that Jesus took their place, defeated their death, and now rules as King. When you declare “Jesus is King,” you’re simultaneously declaring that money, status, pleasure, and career are not. The question is: are you living like He’s King, and are you bold enough to say it out loud?
Reflect:
- When was the last time you shared the gospel message (Jesus died, rose, and reigns) with someone who doesn’t know Him?
- What competing “kings” in your life (career, comfort, control) need to be dethroned so Jesus can truly reign?
- Thank God for the gospel that saved you, and ask Him for boldness to share this clear message with someone this week who needs to hear it.
