Then, when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you?
When have you seen someone perform a grand gesture to show their love for another? These gestures are more than just actions, they mean something. The action communicates love in a way that words fall short.
When Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, He went out of His way to do something that was not His responsibility and a job no one wanted. But this gesture of service was also more than sweet moment; He was also communicating a powerful message. He was communicating the love He had for them and setting the example of the life He wanted for His followers.
Today, it is easy to read the stories in Scripture and see them as meaningful moments without considering the implications on our lives. Even though we were not there, we can consider the same question Jesus asked His disciples, “Do you know what He has done for you?” Do you know He has given you the example of love and humility through the cross and the example of service in His Word that should impact and change how you live? These moments in Scripture are more than an example of kindness but a call to follow the One we have surrendered to. As He led in service so we should serve whole-heartedly as His disciples.
- How has Christ changed the way you see and serve others?
- What are some of your regular rhythms of service? When have you served someone in a sacrificial way?
- Pray and ask God to shape the way you serve others.
