Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.
When was the last time someone pointed out a flaw in something you did or told you about something you did to hurt them? More often than not, our first response is to get defensive. We want to give a reason for why we acted as we did or justify ourselves by noble intentions. When we are confronted with our sin, we need to take it seriously. We need to be reminded of the place of death that sin holds in our lives. When we immediately become defensive, always insisting we are right or have good reasons for what we’ve done, we start down the road of idolatry. We put our position above God. We start to partake in the self-righteousness of the Pharisees and grow blind to the areas of sin in our lives. As long as we live, we are still being sanctified, made further into God’s image. This process is painful; putting things to death is not easy but giving God His rightful place in our lives and being transformed by Him is worth it.
Consider the words of Hebrews 12:1: “Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let’s rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with endurance the race that is set before us.” When we complete the race of faith, it will all be worth it.
- What is a sin that has been entangling you?
- How do you respond when someone appropriate confronts sin in your life? How do you need to reassess your posture in these moments?
- Pray and repent for the times you have hidden and defended your sin instead of surrendering it to God.
