But I tell you that for every careless word that people speak, they will give an account of it on the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

There are certain times in life we know we must be careful because the moment is fragile or dangerous. When we are around a sleeping baby or using a table saw, we know we need to be careful. Our brains go on high alert to give attention to what we are doing. But our everyday words often don’t feel fragile or dangerous. We often speak what comes to mind and don’t think much before speaking. We often forget the words that impact those around us the most. We live in a culture that regularly posts comments on the internet without thinking how it will affect others. Consider someone who has been careful in the words they said or kept the promises they made. Those people have a lasting impact in our lives because of their genuine character that has been proven over time. They have been consistent and intentional in way that stands out.

From the moment we rise to the time we go to sleep, our words matter. They reflect our hearts, whether in the heat of anger or having a conversation with a friend. When we are careless with our words, we forget they have the power to tear down others or build others up by speaking the truths of Christ. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” The ability to communicate is gift from God that should not be squandered! When our speech is glorifying to God, it has the potential to make an eternal impact on someone’s life for good.

  • How do you respond when you recognize you’ve spoken carelessly?
  • What would it look like for you to take more time to assess your words before speaking?
  • Pray and ask God to direct your words and help you be aware of their impact on others.
