Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus… He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:3-8))
Paul’s words to the Philippians remind us that the attitude of Christ is one of deep humility and self-giving love. Jesus, though equal with God, set aside His rights and privileges to serve and save us. True service is not about what we get, but about what we can give. It’s about looking beyond ourselves to the needs, hurts, and hopes of others. Serving with humility means seeing others as valuable and worthy of our time and care.
When we serve, we reflect the attitude of Christ, who made Himself nothing for our sake. This kind of humility is countercultural and sometimes costly, but it’s also the path to real joy and unity. As you serve this week, ask God to help you see beyond your own preferences and comfort. Let Him shape your attitude so that you are eager to serve, not out of obligation, but out of love. Every act of humble service is a testimony to the world of Jesus’ transforming power.
- Are there times when you serve only because you “have to” and not from a genuine heart?
- What is one way you can intentionally put someone else’s interests ahead of your own this week?
- Pray for the mindset of Christ to fill your heart. Ask God to reveal any selfishness or pride and to replace it with humble, joyful service.
