“When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you.” (Luke 10:5-6)
Jesus instructs his followers to enter new places with a blessing of peace. The mission begins not with arguments or demands but with a gentle offering—an invitation for relationship and openness. “Peace to this house” is more than just words; it’s a spiritual gift, a prayer for God’s wholeness and goodness to rest on others. Jesus teaches us to look for “persons of peace”—those who are open, hospitable, and receptive to God’s message. If our peace is received, we’re to stay and build relationship; if not, we move on without bitterness.
This approach models humility and trust. We are not responsible for how people respond; our calling is to bring peace, to listen, to love, and to serve. Sometimes, people will welcome us and the message of Jesus, and sometimes they won’t. Either way, we are called to keep our hearts gentle and our words gracious. When we seek out people of peace and honor their hospitality, we open doors for the gospel that cannot be forced open by argument or pressure.
Reflect today on how you approach new relationships and opportunities to share Jesus’ love. Are you bringing peace and blessing into your conversations, homes, and workplaces? Ask God to help you notice those who are open and to give you wisdom to know when to stay and when to move on.
Reflection Questions:
- How can you practically bring peace to the people and places you visit today?
- What does it look like to search for “persons of peace” in your life?
- How do you handle it when your message or kindness is not received?
