Family Devotional: Growing Together in Christ

Based on 1 Thessalonians 5:12-24

Opening Prayer

Dear God, thank you for bringing our family together today. Help us to learn from your Word and grow closer to you and to each other. Open our hearts to what you want to teach us. Amen.

Read Together

1 Thessalonians 5:12-24 (Read the passage aloud, or summarize the key points for younger children)

Big Idea

God wants us to grow to be more like Jesus by caring for others, talking to Him all day long, and listening to the Holy Spirit.

Discussion for Younger Children

Key Verse: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Summary: Paul wrote a letter to his friends to remind them how to follow Jesus. He told them to be happy, pray all the time, and say thank you to God no matter what happens.

Questions to Discuss:

  1. Can you think of three things you’re thankful for right now?
  2. When you’re happy, what do you like to do? How can we show God we’re happy even when things are hard?
  3. What does it mean to pray “all the time”? Can we talk to God when we’re playing or eating lunch?

Discussion for Older Children

Key Verse: “Encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.” (1 Thessalonians 5:14)

Summary: Paul reminds us that being a Christian isn’t just about what we believe. It’s about how we treat others, especially when they’re struggling. We’re called to encourage people who are discouraged, help people who need it, and be patient even when it’s hard.

Questions to Discuss:

  1. Who is someone in your life (friend, sibling, classmate) who might be discouraged right now? How could you encourage them this week?
  2. What does it mean to “lift up our leaders”? How can we show appreciation for our teachers, coaches, or church leaders?
  3. The sermon talked about having a continuous conversation with God throughout the day. What are some ways you could remind yourself to talk to God more often?

Discussion for Teens

Key Verses: “Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21)

Summary: Paul is wrapping up his letter with practical instructions on how to grow spiritually. He calls us to four key relationships: with our leaders, with each other, with God, and with the Holy Spirit. The Christian life isn’t just a weekly church service. It’s a 24/7 relationship with God where we’re constantly growing to look more like Jesus.

Questions to Discuss:

  1. What does it mean to “quench the Spirit”? Are there areas in your life where you might be resisting what God is trying to do in you?
  2. The sermon mentioned that God’s will is more about who we become than what we do. How does that change the way you think about decisions you’re facing?
  3. Paul says to “test everything.” Why is it important to measure what we hear (even from other Christians) against Scripture?
  4. What spiritual gifts might God have given you? How could you use those gifts to serve others in the church or your community?

Family Application

Choose one of these activities to do together:

  1. Gratitude Challenge: Go around and have each person share three things they’re thankful for. Then commit to sharing one thing you’re grateful for at dinner each night this week.
  2. Prayer Walk: Take a walk together as a family. As you walk, take turns praying short prayers out loud, thanking God for what you see, asking for help with things you’re facing, or praying for neighbors you pass.
  3. Service Project: Talk about someone who might need help or encouragement (a neighbor, family member, or someone from church). Plan one concrete way you can help or encourage them this week.

Closing Prayer

God, thank you for your Word and for teaching us how to grow. Help us to encourage each other, to talk to you all day long, and to listen when your Holy Spirit speaks to us. Make us more like Jesus every day. We love you. Amen.
