. . . not stealing, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect.

Decorations have a special purpose in design, they are put in place to compliment the beauty of what is already there. Many of these adornments are pretty on their own, but their intent is to enhance a beautiful space as the focal point. The characteristics named in our last two days of devotions, including not being argumentative, not stealing, and exemplifying faith through actions are all adornments that point to God our Savior. These behaviors are not designed for us to gain a better reputation or simply make us look like good Christians. They are meant to bring glory to God and are evidence of His work in us. When we live lives that honor Him through the power of the Holy Spirit, not by our own strength, and we point to the One who has redeemed us and made us new.

First John 1:5-7 says, “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” This message is more than one spoken with words, it is a testimony made evident in our actions and attitudes. As we honor Him daily, we adorn the body with the gospel so others might see His beauty and light.

  • Who in your life lives in the light? How are their lives different?
  • Are there any parts of your life where you are still walking in darkness? What needs to change for you to walk in the light?
  • Pray and confess to God the areas where you struggle to walk in the light. Ask Him to lead you for His sake.
