The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether. They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much pure gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, Your servant is warned by them; in keeping them there is great reward.
Have you ever seen a commercial for food that seemed so appealing it made you hungry? Commercials don’t feature any old meal, sitting plain on a plate: they use camera angles, music, and other methods to highlight the food and make it look as good as possible. Imagine if they filmed the same food with bad angles, in poor lighting, and with people making weird faces as they tasted it. No matter how good the food was, it would not look appetizing.
When the psalmist wrote about the law of God, he gave a reminder of the goodness in God’s commandments. So many times, our perception of God’s commandments leans toward the negative instead of displaying the beauty found in them. It is no wonder we don’t take the time to look at them or consider how to grow in obedience if we don’t understand their value. The psalmist declared not only that God is good, but that His law is good. When we realize this, we start to trust God’s commands instead of being skeptical of them. May God’s commands not just be facts we memorize or know about but something we value because He has given us the best way live.
- How has your perception of God’s commands impacted your relationship with Him and His commands?
- How can you grow in seeing God’s way as sweet and desirable like the psalmist described?
- Pray and ask God to open your eyes to the goodness of His commands.
