“And you, child, also will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare His ways; to give His people the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins . . .” (Luke 1:76-77)

Parents have a special place in their hearts for their kids; they want them to be the best they can be. They are proud when their child accomplishes something or grows up to be a person of respect. Many parents may not dream about their child being in a supporting role for their entire lives, always pointing to the work of someone else. Yet, this is exactly what Zechariah was expressing about his son, John the Baptist. He was not focused on all John would do alone but excited for the role John would play in pointing others to the Messiah. Instead of viewing this as a second-rate position, he recognized this was a great honor and reason to praise God.

As broken people, we naturally think about our own desires and dreams before we consider our role is in the kingdom of God. Just as Zechariah could get excited about the supporting role his son would play in pointing to the Messiah, we too should embrace our roles as disciples of Jesus. We point to Jesus, embracing our role as His disciples and seeking glory for the One who has offered salvation and the forgiveness of sins.

  • What does it look like to live a life that points to Jesus? Why is that something to be excited about?
  • What are some specific areas in life where you have an opportunity to point to Jesus? How have you been intentional about those opportunities?
  • Pray and ask God to show you new ways you could point others to Jesus.
