“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'” — John 8:12 (ESV)

Darkness is disorienting. When you can’t see where you’re going, every step feels uncertain, even dangerous. Maybe you’re in a dark season right now, a relationship is broken, a dream has died, you’re battling depression or anxiety, or you simply can’t see what’s next. Jesus doesn’t promise to remove every dark circumstance from our lives, but He does promise something better: He promises to be the light that guides us through it. When Jesus says “I am the light of the world,” He’s saying that no matter how dark your path gets, He will illuminate the next step.

The sermon emphasized that Jesus is with us always, even in our darkest moments. This isn’t just comforting theology; it’s practical truth for today. You don’t need to see the whole path ahead. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to stay close to the Light. When you’re walking with Jesus, you’re never stumbling in complete darkness. He lights the way, one step at a time. And here’s the beautiful part: when you follow the Light, you become a light-bearer yourself. Your willingness to keep walking with Jesus through the dark becomes a beacon for others who are lost. Your presence, empowered by His presence, can illuminate someone else’s path.

Reflect:

  • What “dark” situation in your life feels most disorienting right now?
  • How can you practically stay close to Jesus as your Light today, even when you can’t see the full path ahead?
  • Thank Jesus for being your light in dark times, and ask Him to help you trust His guidance even when you can only see one step ahead.
