“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” — John 15:1, 4 (ESV)
There’s something humbling about Jesus’ vine metaphor. A branch doesn’t produce fruit through effort or willpower, it produces fruit by staying connected to the vine. Cut off from the vine, the branch doesn’t just stop producing fruit; it withers and dies. Jesus is saying, “Apart from me, you can do nothing.” Not “you can do less” or “you’ll struggle more”—you can do nothing of eternal value. That’s a hard truth in a culture that celebrates self-sufficiency and independence. We want to believe we can manufacture spiritual fruit on our own, but Jesus is clear: connection to Him is everything.
The sermon talked about the mission Jesus gives us, to make disciples and to be sent into the world. But here’s what we often miss: we can’t fulfill that mission in our own strength. The power to live out the Great Commission comes from abiding in Christ. When you stay connected to Him, through prayer, through His Word, through worship, through community, His life flows through you. The fruit isn’t something you produce; it’s something that grows naturally from your connection to Him. So if you’re feeling dried out, exhausted, or fruitless in your faith, the answer isn’t to try harder. The answer is to abide more deeply. Stay connected. Let His presence be your source.
Reflect:
- What does “abiding in Christ” practically look like in your daily routine?
- Are there areas of your life where you’ve been trying to produce fruit through your own effort instead of staying connected to Jesus?
- Ask God to show you how to abide more deeply in Him, and surrender any areas where you’ve been relying on your own strength instead of His.
