“So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, ‘Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?’ He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority.'” Acts 1:6-7

The disciples were asking a legitimate question, but they were fixated on the wrong thing. They wanted to know whenGod would restore Israel’s political power, but Jesus redirected them to what they should be doing in the meantime. It’s easy for us to get caught up in speculation about end times, political outcomes, or future events while missing the mission right in front of us. Jesus essentially says, “Don’t worry about the timeline, focus on the task.”

The Stockdale Principle illustrates this perfectly. In this study, prisoners who fixated on specific release dates lost hope when those dates passed. But those who stayed focused on surviving each day while maintaining confidence in eventual freedom made it through. We can apply this spiritually: don’t fixate on when Jesus will return or when circumstances will change. Fix your eyes on Jesus Himself and on the daily mission He’s given you. What matters isn’t decoding prophecy or predicting the future, it’s faithfully loving God and loving others today, right where you are.

Reflect:

  • What future concerns or “what ifs” am I fixating on that are distracting me from the mission God has for me today?
  • How can I shift my focus from trying to control or predict the future to faithfully living out God’s purposes in the present?
  • Confess to God any anxiety about the future or desire to control outcomes, and ask Him to help you fix your eyes on Jesus and focus on today’s obedience.
