“That no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this.” (1 Thessalonians 3:3)
This is one of those verses we’d rather skip over. Destined for affliction? That’s not the message we want to hear. But Paul doesn’t sugarcoat reality. He told the Thessalonians before he left that suffering would come, and now he’s reminding them that hardship is part of following Jesus. The question isn’t if we’ll face trials, but how we’ll respond when they come. Will we be moved, shaken from our faith? Or will we stand firm, rooted in the truth that Christ is with us in the storm?
Here’s the countercultural truth: it’s not our circumstances that need to change for us to thrive spiritually. The global workers in Africa who get beaten for sharing the gospel and then dust themselves off to walk to the next village understand this deeply. They don’t wait for persecution to end before they experience joy. They find their strength in Christ regardless of what’s happening around them. What would it look like for you to stop waiting for your circumstances to improve before you fully engage with God? What if the hard season you’re in right now is exactly where God wants to meet you and establish your heart in deeper faith?
Reflect:
- What difficult circumstance are you waiting to change before you can fully trust God or step into what He’s calling you to do?
- How can you prepare your heart now for future afflictions, so that when they come, your faith remains unshaken?
- Pray for a solid theology of suffering, asking God to help you see trials as opportunities for your faith to grow rather than obstacles to overcome.
