“Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the prophecies, but test everything and hold fast to what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21)

The Holy Spirit is not a force or a feeling but a person, God Himself, who dwells within every believer. He seals us, convicts us, guides us, empowers us, gifts us, and produces fruit through us. Yet how often do we silence Him or pour water on what He’s trying to do in our lives? Maybe the Spirit convicts us of sin and we ignore it. Maybe He nudges us to reach out to someone or step into service and we resist. Maybe He’s given us gifts we’re too afraid or too busy to use. When we do this, we’re quenching the Spirit, putting a lid on the flame He’s trying to ignite in us.

Learning to recognize and follow the Spirit’s leading takes practice and courage. Often His voice is the one that isn’t our own, the thought that challenges us to do what we’d rather avoid, the insight we couldn’t have come up with ourselves. The more we step out in faith when we sense His prompting, the better we get at discerning His voice. This week, slow down enough to listen. Ask God to speak and then pay attention to those quiet promptings. Test them against Scripture and the character of Jesus, and when they align, take the step. Don’t let fear or busyness cause you to miss what God wants to do through you.

Reflect:

  • Where might I be quenching the Holy Spirit in my life right now?
  • What gift has God given me that I’m not fully using to build up others?
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to speak clearly to you this week and give you the courage to step out in obedience when He prompts you.
