“The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: ‘Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.’ But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish.” (Jonah 1:1-3)

Sometimes God calls us to the hardest places. For Jonah, Nineveh represented everything he feared and hated. The Assyrians were brutally violent, known for their cruelty and endless bloodshed. Going there wasn’t just uncomfortable; it felt impossible. Yet God’s call was clear. We often face similar moments when God asks us to step toward people or situations that make us want to run in the opposite direction. Maybe it’s that family member who hurt you, the coworker with completely different values, or the neighbor whose lifestyle you don’t understand. Like Jonah, we can find ourselves paying the fare and boarding the ship to anywhere but where God is sending us.

The beauty and challenge of God’s call is that it reveals our hearts. When we run from difficult obedience, we’re usually running from more than just the task itself. We’re running from trusting that God’s heart is good, that His ways are higher, and that He will equip us for what He asks. Jonah’s disobedience wasn’t just about refusing a mission; it was about refusing to share God’s heart for all people, even his enemies. What if the very thing you’re avoiding is the exact place God wants to meet you and transform you? The call you’re running from might be the doorway to experiencing God’s power in ways you never imagined.

Reflect:

  • What is God calling you to that feels too hard, too uncomfortable, or too much to ask?
  • Are you running from a person, a conversation, or a commitment because you’d rather keep God’s grace to yourself and those you already love?
  • Ask God to show you where you might be running from His call. Pray for the courage to stop, turn around, and take one step toward obedience, trusting that He goes with you.
