The mind of a person plans his way,

But the Lord directs his steps.

Children can easily tell you their dreams and ambitions. Whether it’s to be an astronaut, a doctor, or a monster truck driver, most kids don’t have trouble dreaming about their future. But as any adult knows, these dreams don’t always stay the same or turn out how we’d hoped. We might believe adults live with a greater sense of reality than children, and we often work under the assumption that we have things figured out. We can plan our ways feeling like we know what is best for lives. While we may find ourselves closer to reality than a child dreaming of the future, our plans are never set in stone. At the end of the day, we still have limits. Like children, we don’t know what the future holds, and we are still learning about ourselves and our place in the world.

True wisdom comes in submitting our plans before the Lord. We will constantly be frustrated and disappointed until we see our plans in light of His will and sovereignty. Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord, ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.’” Let’s be honest with ourselves about what we do not know, holding our plans with open hands and trusting God’s sovereignty with every step.
