“Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace.” (1 Thessalonians 1:1)

This simple greeting contains a miracle. After the violence, the mob, the stolen money, and Paul’s hasty exit, you might wonder if that baby church survived. But here’s the letter, addressed not to “former Thessalonians” or “the cowards who quit,” but to “the church of the Thessalonians.” They made it. What’s more, they thrived. As you read through First Thessalonians, you’ll see that what the church was built on is what it became. Sent people became a sending church. An open Bible became a Bible-anchored community. A clear gospel message led to transformed lives. Steadfast faith led to a thriving church.

Paul would later write that the Thessalonians were his joy and crown of boasting. This little church that started in chaos became world changers. The word of God rang out from them to the entire region. Why? Because they didn’t drift from their foundation. They stayed sent, kept their Bibles open, clung to the gospel, and remained steadfast through opposition. Whether your church is 8 months old or 27 years old, the challenge is the same: don’t drift. What you build on today determines what you become tomorrow. Keep going. Stay faithful. The fruit of your labor will grow on trees you may never see.

Reflect:

  • Looking at your own spiritual life, what foundation are you building on, and will it sustain you in the years ahead?
  • What specific drift (in mission, Scripture engagement, gospel clarity, or faith) do you need to correct before it takes you further off course?
  • Thank God for His faithfulness through every season, and commit to building your life on the foundations of being sent, staying in the Word, clinging to the gospel, and developing steadfast faith that endures.
