“For we know, brothers, loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.” (1 Thessalonians 1:4-5a)
How do you know if your faith is real? It’s a question that haunts many of us, especially in moments of doubt or when we see others who seem more spiritual, more committed, more fired up than we are. Paul gives us an answer that might surprise you. He doesn’t point to perfect theology or emotional experiences. Instead, he says you’ll know the gospel has truly taken root when it produces visible power in your life. When God’s word meets a willing heart, something happens. There’s a reaction, like mixing two chemicals together. The gospel doesn’t just inform you; it transforms you.
Think about your own spiritual journey. Has the gospel remained just information, or has it become transformation? The difference shows up in how you live. A gospel that comes “in word only” might fill your head with facts about Jesus, but a gospel that comes “in power and in the Holy Spirit” will change how you treat your difficult coworker, how you spend your money, and what you do with your free time. The evidence of real faith isn’t just what you know or how you feel. It’s what you do with what you know.
Reflect:
- When did you first experience the gospel as more than just information? What changed in your life?
- What area of your life right now needs the transforming power of the Holy Spirit rather than just more knowledge?
- Ask God to show you where you’ve settled for a “word only” faith and invite the Holy Spirit to bring His transforming power to those areas.
