They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who, then, is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
When a storm is brewing over the ocean, even modern technology can’t stop the storm. We can only make predictions about the magnitude and direction of the storm to help people prepare and take shelter. In the images of a hurricane’s aftermath, the path of the storm is often made evident by the flooding and demolished buildings.
The understanding of the power and destructive nature of a storm terrified the disciples. They saw the boat fill with water as the storm continued to rage and they felt the danger of their situation. They felt completely powerless against the magnitude of the storm, but instead of asking Jesus for help, they accused Him of not caring for their safety. In a moment, everything changed, and Jesus’s control over the situation became clear. He had power over the storm, and He really did care.
We make a lot of assumptions about our lives, our purpose, and even who God is. Like the disciples, we face difficult circumstances that are outside of our control and get overwhelmed and afraid. Yet we can run to the One who is in control of the storm, will be with us in the storm, and will help us through the storm. Romans 8:38-39 says, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” You will never face a challenge that is outside of God’s scope or control. Don’t be afraid but run to Him—the One who calmed the raging seas is with you.
- What is happening in your life that is outside of your control? Have you trusted God with it? Why or why not?
- Who in your life needs to know the presence and power of Jesus amid the storms they face?
- Pray for your neighbors to find Jesus as their hope and anchor in any storms they face.
