And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
As we get to know people, we start to build rapport. This is more than learning about someone; it’s key to building a good relationship with them. When we show up on time, listen, or serve someone, we hope to do more than just good tasks; we want to build good rapport as a trustworthy person and a good friend.
Up to this point, Jesus had performed miracles; He had taught; and He had set apart the twelve disciples for ministry. He did all these things to reveal who He was as Messiah. Yet when the storm raged, the disciples easily forgot the miracles that drew the crowds and the wisdom that pointed to His place as Messiah. With their eyes on the winds and waves around them, the disciples forgot who was with them. The Son of God had been showing them who He was throughout their relationship, building a good rapport, and they believed when it was right in front of them. But when their circumstances changed, their belief wasn’t so strong.
It is hard to admit that we suffer from this same lack of faith. We have so much knowledge about Jesus from what we hear in sermons and read in His Word, but we forget who He is and how to rely on Him during the storms of life. Like the disciples, when our circumstances are less than ideal, we forget all Jesus has done, and how He has proven to be trustworthy and present in our lives, and we feel alone and hopeless. But even in the winds and waves of life, we can hold on to Jesus with hope. As Christ followers, our hope is not that we have ideal circumstances from God but that we have God with us through in the trials we face.
- When have you struggled with weak faith like the disciples?
- What are some things you know about Jesus that you need to remember during the storms of life?
- Pray and ask God to help you believe Him, even during the trials you face.
