And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.

How many things can you do with a voice command? Today’s technology allows us to speak and turn on the lights, start an appliance, or even set a timer. It is cutting edge technology that brings us convenience for everyday tasks, but it also reminds us of God’s power.

God is much greater and more powerful that any machine. He existed before anything or anyone else and spoke all of creation into being. So, all of creation is tuned to His voice and obeys His command. And just like He did at creation, Jesus spoke a command over the storm, not in fear but with the authority only God has over creation.

When things feel out of control, we have a hard time remembering God’s authority and looking to Him, the One who is in control of it all. Only He has authority over this earth; only He can give us hope in the storm. When we panic, He is our constant and calm; He is not shaken by our anxiety but present with us and listening to us when we call out to Him. As Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-29, “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” No matter what kinds of storms God’s people face, He is always with us.

  • What stresses of life are you trying to take care of on your own? What would it look like to give those things over to Jesus?
  • When has the Lord calmed a storm in your life? Who needs to hear that testimony?
  • Pray for all followers of Christ to know Jesus’s authority and peace in the storms they face.
