“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”
When was a time you were hurt by things people said about you? When someone spreads rumors about us, it often leaves a deep wound. Whether the words were intentional digs or innocent remarks, the damage is done as soon as they leave the mouth of the person. Sometimes it takes years to realize how deeply someone’s words affected us. Before we could even speak, God knew the impact our words could make. He knows the power language has and how words can build up or tear down.
The command to not to give false testimony reminds us of the impact of words. Even though it is easy to stretch the truth and justify doing so, it is always wrong. Even when we are hurt, we are called to be careful with the words we say, choosing them wisely no matter the situation. Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but if there is any good word for edification according to the need of the moment, say that, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” Your words matter to God, they can glorify Him or point away from Him—they can build people up or tear them down. May God give us self-control in moments of frustration and clarity in the words we can say to build others up instead of tearing them down with false testimony.
