Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord,
But those who deal faithfully are His delight.
Have you ever heard it said that someone would do anything to get ahead? This indicates a person is willing to make almost any compromise, whether in circumstances or relationships, to achieve personal success. Ultimately, this indicates selfishness in the heart of that person. We may easily identify the wrong in this from the outside looking in, but we do the same thing if we are not people who tell the truth. We compromise the truth about reality and others to gain something for ourselves, whether actual status or just the approval of another. Lying lips are an abomination to God because whenever we lie, we put ourselves at the center of the universe, justifying our false version of reality. In the web of our reasoning, our feelings, and wrestling with the sin of others, it is hard to deal faithfully with our circumstances. In the heat of the moment, it can be hard to resist exaggeration to get a reaction from our spouse. In the height of financial crisis, it can be hard to speak honestly when it will literally cost us.
As we navigate dealing with the circumstances of life, we can be encouraged by the words of Hebrews 12:3 that says, “For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Jesus was on the receiving end of many false claims. He was publicly humiliated as an innocent man. He was rejected by those closest to Him in His darkest hour. He endured more hostility than we can imagine. Looking to His finished work and example, we can also not grow weary and lose heart in the moments we are tempted to live or speak falsely. He is our guide and has given us the Holy Spirit to equip us to live truthfully for Him.
- How does a self-centered attitude lead to lying? What are some ways we justify this?
- How has Christ changed the way you speak to and about others?
- Pray and ask God to transform your heart, equipping you to love others, even when they are against you.
