For nothing is concealed that will not become evident, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.

Since the beginning, the first reaction to sin was to hide. When Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, they hid their sin. They made clothes from fig leaves and started the age-old game of cover up. But their attempt to cover themselves and hide their sin was short lived. God didn’t let them linger in their hiding, their sin was exposed and brought to light in His presence. Their actions had consequences but that exposure in the light of His presence also brought better solutions for their sin. When we seek to cover up our sin, we start this futile pattern again.

This passage makes it clear; it is not a matter of if the truth will come to light but when. We have seen countless examples of dishonesty exposed in scandal. The news is often shocking, and the fallout is great. What is beautiful about being honest to God what we want to hide is God is not looking to heap shame on us. Rather He knows our sinful state and the hurt that comes with it, and He has made a permanent solution to redeem us and restore us from it. First John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” All that is concealed will become evident. So, the question is, will we run to the One who has the solution for us or attempt in like Adam and Eve to try to take care of it ourselves.

  • What are some ways you’ve tried to cover your own sin?
  • How have you seen God’s faithfulness to redeem and restore when you confess our sin to Him?
  • Pray and confess any sin you are trying to cover up.
