“But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.” (1 Thessalonians 5:4-5)

What does it mean to be a child of light? It’s more than just avoiding obviously bad behavior. Being sober and vigilant in our spiritual walk means actively pursuing Jesus, not just passively avoiding sin. Think of it like a soldier on a watchtower. He didn’t stumble into that position. He was placed there with purpose, trained for the task, and given a clear mission: watch for the enemy. That’s our calling too. We don’t drift into spiritual vigilance. We choose it daily through prayer, reading God’s Word, worshiping, fasting, and surrounding ourselves with other believers who sharpen us.

The sermon challenged us to examine what makes us spiritually drunk or asleep. Is it the endless scroll through social media that leaves us zombie-like? The lies we believe about ourselves or others? The pursuit of instant gratification that numbs our hearts? These things steal our attention from Christ and place it elsewhere. But here’s the good news: you’re already a child of light if you’re in Christ. Now it’s about living like it. Start today by identifying one thing that’s making you spiritually drowsy and replace it with something that draws you closer to Jesus.

Reflect:

  • What specific habits or activities are causing spiritual drunkenness in your life right now?
  • How can you be more intentional about “putting on” the armor of God each morning?
  • Ask God to reveal areas where you’ve been spiritually asleep and give you the strength to pursue vigilance in your walk with Him.
