“But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.” (1 Peter 3:15)
People are watching. They may not say it directly, but they’re looking for someone who has real hope, not just optimism or positive thinking. They want to see a life that looks different because of Jesus. The question Peter raises is this: are you living in such a way that people would even think to ask about the hope in you? Is there something noticeably different about how you handle disappointment, how you treat difficult people, how you respond when life doesn’t go your way?
This isn’t about being perfect or pretending you have it all together. Vanessa, the young woman from the orphanage, didn’t have perfect circumstances. She was in an abusive situation, separated from her family, living in an orphanage. But people kept coming back to show her hope in Christ, and eventually that hope became hers. Now she radiates that same hope to others. Your readiness isn’t about having all the theological answers. It’s about being able to point to Jesus when someone notices something different in you. And notice how Peter says to do it: with gentleness and reverence. Not with judgment or superiority, but with the same grace you’ve received.
Reflect:
- If someone observed your life this past week, what would they conclude you’re hoping in?
- Who in your life might be quietly watching to see if your faith makes a real difference?
- Ask God to make the hope of Christ so evident in your life that people can’t help but notice. Pray for opportunities to share about Jesus with gentleness and for the courage to actually take those opportunities when they come.
