“Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:13)
Our minds are constantly being pulled in a thousand directions. Social media notifications, news headlines, worries about tomorrow, regrets about yesterday. It’s exhausting. Peter tells us to “prepare our minds for action.” The image is of someone tucking in their flowing robes so they can move freely without getting tripped up. What’s tripping you up mentally? What thoughts are you letting flow freely that are actually keeping you from moving forward in hope?
Fixing your hope completely on grace requires some intentional refusal. You might need to refuse certain movies, refuse endless scrolling, refuse conversations that pull you into negativity and fear. This isn’t about legalism or trying to be perfect. It’s about protecting your mind so it can stay anchored to what’s true. What if, instead of filling your mind with everything that’s wrong in the world, you spent time meditating on what Jesus did on the cross? What if you let the seven sayings of Jesus roll through your mind throughout the day? “Father, forgive them.” “Today you will be with me in paradise.” When you anchor your mind to the grace of Christ, everything else starts to lose its power over you.
Reflect:
- What specific things do you need to refuse in order to keep your mind prepared and sober?
- How much time do you spend thinking about what Christ did for you compared to worrying about your circumstances?
- Ask God to help you identify what’s cluttering your mind and keeping you from fixing your hope on His grace. Pray for the discipline to refuse what hinders and embrace what anchors your soul.
