Whom He richly poured out upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
A common way to describe a transformation in someone’s life from having nothing to having everything is “from rags to riches.” Sometimes these rags to riches stories are inspiring because the person worked hard to overcome challenging obstacles. But sometimes these stories are powerful because the person clearly could not have made it on his or her own: he or she was brought there through the generosity of others.
The amazing part of our being made heirs with Christ by the grace of God is we have done nothing to deserve it. God pours out His grace on us through Jesus Christ, solely because of what Jesus has done and because of who we are or anything we did. Being heirs does not indicate the passive reception of a gift only. This is a calling—a new life to step into. Galatians 3:26-29 says, “For you are all sons and daughters of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.” This is your new identity. Because of Christ you have gone from rags to riches. You have more than an inheritance, you have a new identity. It’s time to walk in it!
- What excites you about your eternal inheritance in Christ?
- What would it look like to live as God’s child and heir? How does that look different from the way you are living today?
- Pray for someone you want to be brought into the family of God as His heir.
