“And behold, I Myself have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and in the hearts of all who are skillful I have put skill, so that they may make everything that I have commanded you.” Exodus 31:6
When a new baby is born, one of the first things the family does is look at their features to see who they resemble. As the child grows older, it is often easier to connect a child’s personality and talents to family members who share their traits. This is a reminder that we are more than just autonomous individuals in the world. Each person was created. Each person is tied to a biological family with genes that they did not choose for themselves. Each person has traits that did not originate with them.
When God was naming the giftedness of His people, He made sure they knew where these gifts came from. He said, “in the hearts of all who are skillful I have put skill.” When we look for where our skill comes from, we don’t need to look any further than God who designed us and created us uniquely. The last portion of this verse gives us insight into why God designed us this way. He gave us skills so we could use them by His power and for His glory. He designed us for life with Him and to point others to Him. Matthew 5:16 says, “Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Our gifts are not meant for personal status or leverage but to glorify our great God.
- What are some of your skills you have given God credit for? What are some skills you have not given God credit for?
- What does it look like to use a skill for your own benefit? What does it look like to use a skill for God’s glory?
- Pray and thank God for all the skills you have and ask Him to show you how to use them for His glory.
