“But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, ‘Get up and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ And he got up and went.” – Acts 8:26-27

Philip was in the middle of a revival in Samaria. Crowds were responding, miracles were happening, and ministry was thriving. Then God said, “Leave all this success and go to a desert road.” No explanation, no promise of another revival, just a command to go. And Philip went. What you should love about this story is what happens next: Philip encounters one person, an Ethiopian eunuch, and has what might have been the most awkward conversation starter ever: “Do you understand what you’re reading?” But Philip’s willingness to embrace the awkward positioned him for a divine appointment that would spread the gospel to an entirely new region.

How often do you miss divine appointments because you’re unwilling to embrace the awkward? You sense God prompting you to talk to someone about Jesus, but you convince yourself it would be weird or uncomfortable. You see an opportunity to serve, but it doesn’t fit your comfort zone or your idea of “successful ministry.” Here’s a practical challenge from Philip’s example: start with a question. You don’t need a sermon prepared or all the answers figured out. Just genuinely care and ask a simple question about someone’s life or faith. “What do you think about that?” can open doors you never imagined. The gospel often advances not through your polished presentations but through your willingness to step into uncomfortable, Spirit-led moments with authentic curiosity and care.

Reflect:

  • When was the last time you sensed God prompting you to have a spiritual conversation but talked yourself out of it? What held you back?
  • Who is one person in your life right now that you could simply ask a genuine question about their faith or spiritual journey?
  • Pray this simple but powerful prayer: “Lord, would you create opportunities for me to talk about you, and would you give me the courage to take those opportunities?”
